You can be a nurse in Alabama making $32/hr (on the higher end) , or a nurse in California making $100/hr (shift avaerage), and still be swimming in debt. Its true, I have chatted with plenty of coworkers all across the nation while I am on contract, and they have a main complaint of paying off debt. They stay at their curent job instead of swapping specialties because of FEAR of losing money and not being able to pay loans. Many stay on night shift for the differential, even though they can't make the drive home the next moring without having to pull over for a nap. This terrifies me for my coworkers and anyone who feels like this situation applies to them, whether in healthcare or any job. If you TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR FINANCES you will have CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE.
For example: You decide you are passionate about infusions and move from inpatient to clinic nursing, there may be a paycut. If your have control of your finances and no debt, this would be a no-brainer job swap. Your debts are gone, you have a spending plan, and you probably have a jackpot in savings since you took control of your money. Now, you have the freedom to pursue a career without fear holding you back.
Your life will no longer be dictated by the shift-diffs or long hours for extra pay. Many talk about their dreams and aspirations, going back to school, becoming a manager, practitioner, director, etc. and add that in addition to the new title, there will be a "great pay bump". "I will be able to pay off my house a few years earlier!" , "I will have the student loans paid down in 5 years maximum!" , "I'll supplement with credit cards until I figure everything out." . If it is your passion, go for it, but remember that you will be tied to whatever job comes first out of the fear that you must pay back those loans.
THIS IS EXACLTY WHY I WANT TO COACH OTHER PEOPLE WHO FEEL STUCK IN THEIR FINANCES. I believe everyone can be successful, love their job, and have no debt. It takes discipline, and people need a mentor that will cheer them on. I am in your corner and I believe in you. I have walked the steps, and will retrace those steps with YOU.
