Are you tired…

of sitting under the fluorescent lights for 12 hours per day (or night!), counting down the time until you are able to clock out? I hear you. And I promise, it is not just you. The average turnover rate per year in an inpatient setting is 21 for every 100 nurses.

These five jobs might be you next big career move!

  1. Telehealth RN:

    Average Salary: $74,000 (ZipRecruiter)

The Telehealth RN serves a major role in making connections throughout their community, especially the rural and transportation-sparse areas. In this role, you would conduct assessments (ask questions, patient can take vital signs, etc.), education, counseling, crisis intervention, and care planning. there are protocols and guidelines to follow to escalate decisions if higher levels of care seem to be necessary. This is conducted over the phone or a videocam. This role will involve primarily communicating with the patient.

  2. Utilization Review RN:

    Average Salary: $89,500 (Salary.com)

As a Utilization Review Nurse, your job is to ensure that the standards of the facility are being upheld through only medically necessary interventions for the patient that are cost-effective, and to be the communicator between providers, insurance companies, and patients. This is done by reviewing charts, care documentation, and billing notes. This job will primarily involve document review.

  3. Triage RN:

    Average Salary: $65,700 (ZipRecruiter)

The Remote Triage RN conducts a triage based on the patients subjective complaints/comments, possibly through a video call to visually assess, and will make a recommendation to guide treatment based on the decided level of care. Example: A patient calls and says they have a dry cough, no other symptoms. The nurse would make an educated, policy-driven decision about whether to send the patient to the ER (probably not!) or suggest they see their primary family doctor for a possible sinus infection.

  4. Case Management RN:

    Average Salary: $98,000 (ZipRecruiter)

A Case Management RN assesses each patient’s clinical and social needs, collaborates with the care team, and creates discharge plans tailored to that individual. They help arrange follow-up appointments, home health services, medical equipment, rehab stays, and more—making sure no detail is missed.

  5. Clinical Scheduler RN:

    Average Salary: $43,600 (ZipRecruiter)

A remote nurse scheduler plays a vital role in organizing staff coverage to ensure patients receive timely and efficient care. Each day, they coordinate shift schedules, adjust for call-outs, and balance staffing needs across various units or facilities. They communicate closely with nurses, managers, and HR to resolve scheduling conflicts and maintain adequate coverage. Working from home, they rely heavily on scheduling software, time management, and strong communication skills. While it’s behind-the-scenes work, it’s essential to keeping healthcare operations running smoothly.
